Last night on “The Bachelor”, the subject of the show (Jason) returned to his hometown with the five remaining crazies women in tow. This also gave him the opportunity to see and spend time with his son, who I’m sure misses his dad very much.
Jason had a planned date with one of the women, Melissa, for 7:30 p.m. She got all glammed up (in a ridiculous dress that had some silly snake ornament poking out over her cleavage) and was waiting for The Bachelor to arrive. Unfortunately, what she didn’t know was that the son didn’t want the dad to leave, and pulled a bit of a whining guilt trip on him which worked perfectly.
While I wasn’t exactly impressed with the way Jason handled his son (maybe his passivity and indulgence was for the cameras, maybe not), what surprised me more was how thoughtlessly he handled the situation with Melissa. Apparently, she sat there for at least a half hour past their scheduled date time, having no idea what was going on, or even whether or not he was going to show up at all.

Sometimes, when I go outside to smoke, I take my MacBook (yay, wireless!), and sometimes, I actually take a real book.
I leave whatever book I’m currently reading on the counter next to my cigarettes, so that it’s easy to grab when I’m preparing to go out again. Last night, I noticed that I had collected not just one book up there, but a stack of them, all in various stages of reading completion!
Yes, that’s right: I’m reading six fiction paperbacks simultaneously. When I want a book to read with my cigarette, I’ll shuffle through them to see which one I’m most interested in at the moment. The next time I decide to take a book with me outside, I inevitably will choose a different one than I did the last time.
For me, this is strange behavior indeed, considering that (in years past, particularly oh say, 15 to 20 years ago) I was the kind of person who would consume a book rapidly and in a very compulsive, “I can’t put this down” sort of fashion. And, if a book was so uninteresting to me that I could put it down for more than a few hours, it was unlikely that I would ever pick it up again.
To me, this is a sign of one of two things (or both): boredom/depression or ADD. Either I’ve finally lost interest in reading for pleasure (which has been a fundamental love of mine since the age of two), or I’ve lost the ability to focus on any single book long enough to derive that same old pleasure from it.
This makes me sad.

The local news covered an article in Women’s Health magazine on 34 Best Beauty Finds. Since I’m a beauty product freak but hate spending a lot of money, I had to check it out immediately.
I was a little tickled to see that my mascara of choice (L’Oreal Voluminous) was on the list; I’ve tried countless mascaras in my lifetime, but this is the one I keep coming back to again and again.
One new (to me) product from this list which I think I’ll try is Roc Retinol Correxion Deep-Wrinkle Serum. The expert in the news report sold me on it: “Women’s Health’s dermatologist says this is the best product on the market over the counter, either in a drugstore or high-end boutique, and it’s only $20.”
Hey, I’m 43, stressed, a smoker, and a salon tanner. I need all the wrinkle-fighting help I can get!!
